Shawnee is home to many great things: a great university, great people, two bowling alleys, great churches, and tons of great places to eat. What is the best though? Whataburger? Chick-fil-A? Panda Express? Not even close. The best places to eat in Shawnee are the local, hole in the wall places, and I’m gonna give you the best five local places to eat in Shawnee. All of these places not only have incredible food, but are also really cheap meals for when you want a break from the GC food.
Phoenix is a fantastic, authentic Chinese food restaurant loved by Shawnee natives. Located on Union Street just off Highland in downtown Shawnee, Phoenix has a wide variety of chicken and beef, as well as a ton of great sushi. My favorite, however, is the egg drop soup. The BEST egg drop soup ever. It’s also pretty cheap! You can get an entrée, rice, crab rangoons, an egg roll, and soup for $7.50! Phoenix is open Monday through Saturday but go early if you go for dinner because it gets crowded. You can also call in orders to go at 405-214-0888. Happy eating!
Giorgios is home to the best pizza in town. Located off Harrison Street in the small strip mall between Federal and Independence, Giorgios has all different kinds of pizza! You can order classic favorites, new Giorgio-original creations, or you can custom make your own with as many kinds of toppings as you want. Handmade right in front of you, Giorgios also offers incredible gyros, stromboli, and desserts! You can order by the slice or get a whole pizza, from personal size to giant extra large pizzas for really cheap! As close to New York pizza as you can get.
3. Billy Boy
Billy Boy is a “barbecue” joint but is really a jack-of-all-trades place. Billy Boy is next to Paul’s Place in the small little strip mall just off MacArthur, about a half mile from OBU’s campus. Billy Boy offers all kinds of food, from burgers to ribs, chicken nuggets to catfish. You can get just about anything here, and it’s guaranteed to be delicious. The best here, however, are the sides/appetizers. Billy Boy has the best, most incredible fried okra I’ve ever had, the ranch dressing is top of the line, and their cheese fries (especially with bacon!) rival Eskimo Joes! Billy Boy is a little more expensive but is still under the $10 range. Stop by and check out this great place to eat!
4. Don Ciros
Don Ciros is probably the most unknown place on this list but is the greatest Mexican food in Shawnee. Don Ciros is in a small metal building on Harrison Street (924 N. Harrison specifically). Don Ciros is the epitome of authentic Mexican food, even the salsa is served hot. This place is totally worth your time, though! With fried chalupas, incredible enchiladas, and authentic Mexican sodas called Jarritos, it is an incredible experience. The highlight of this unique place is the steak tacos. Rice and beans, fajita steak, cheese, onions, and cilantro make this one of the best and cheapest Mexican meals you can have in Shawnee. Stop by anytime for lunch or dinner, but get there quick because it will fill up quick.
5. Robb’s Smokehouse
Robb’s is a place you’ve probably seen all the time, as it is right across the street from campus, but might not have been a place you’ve eaten at. Robb’s is another small little joint but has some incredible barbecue. The ribs and brisket are incredible, as well as the barbecue sauce. But the crowning jewel, the shining achievement, is the super spud. Not just a spud with lots of stuff on it, but a spud with brisket inside. It’s a huge spud filled to the max with cheese, brisket, and optional onions, and is one of the best things you could eat in town, putting all other barbecue to shame. Robb’s is also run by Christians, so go out and support them by eating some incredible barbecue!
Go out and support some great local places this semester! But don’t just limit it to these five: ask around, find some others, and find some great local places to eat! Other great places are Hamburger King, Coney Island, Bell St. Onion Burger, Benedict Street Deli, and Sunny Side-Up if you are craving some breakfast food. Go out and explore all the food Shawnee has to offer!
