Rather than us telling you what OBU is like, hear from those who are living the experience now.

Life on the Hill: Bison Blog

A couple weeks ago I packed up my things and moved to OBU to start a new adventure. Despite what my friends told me, I still didn’t fully know what to expect. I wasn’t even sure if I made the right choice; but within about a day I knew for sure that this was where I was supposed to be.

The morning of Move-In Day, my entire family came to my house to say good bye. My little cousin still thought I was just going a way for a weekend and would be back in a few days. My grandma handed me a Starbucks gift card saying “you’ll need this.” And my mom (and I, to be honest) were holding back tears.

A couple hours later and we are finally on the road. We get out of OKC, and are headed straight for Shawnee, the place I already can call my new home.

The rush of unpacking everything into a very small room, getting room and mail keys, and saying good-bye to mom and dad was slightly overwhelming. I already could tell I needed another extension cord and definitely more snacks. And by the time I went to bed I was exhausted. Welcome week had begun, and it was only the first day!

Then Sunday morning came, and we began the day with worship. ahhhhh. Thanks to the Lord who makes all my worries and stress fly away. I was reminded of one of my favorite verses, Deuteronomy 31:8. It says, “The Lord is the one who will go before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.” It was in this moment that I began to realize I had “found my place” at OBU. In reality being a freshman in college can be scary. But my life is in God’s hands. He takes care of me. He tells me not to be afraid, because He knows exactly what lies ahead of me.

It’s been 2 weeks and I’ve already made some crazy memories. From late night ice cream trips to workout classes at the RAWC to jam sessions in the WMU lobby, life as a Bison has been a joy. And I cannot wait to see where the rest of the year takes me.

The Author Catalina Zacarias

My name is Catalina Zacarias, I’m from OKC and I’m currently a freshman at OBU. I am majoring in Health and Human Performance with hopes of one day becoming a physical therapist and medical missionary. That said, my vision for my life is to serve and obey the Lord in all that I do. I enjoy watching movies, writing, adventuring, playing my violin, spending time with friends, and working with kids. I am so excited to be part of the Bison family and to see where the next four years go!
