The Community of Friends in College
The journey to Oklahoma Baptist University was incredible and it taught me so much of God’s grace, love, and presence, but it has been breathtaking to experience the depth of those things since then. From the very beginning, OBU has always put their focus to the community it holds, and I am here to tell you that it is extraordinary and will no doubt leave you amazed at how God has formed a school into something so encouraging in your journey to become the next best teacher, nurse, doctor, counselor, or businessman, but most of all, it is a university that provides spiritual challenges in order to grow in your walk with the Lord. With all of these amazing attributes toward OBU, I want to focus on one, and it’s the community of friends that have been given to me through this wonderful place.
My friends at OBU are an answer to a prayer over and over again. As an 18 year-old Christian teenage girl coming into college, I knew what I wanted in friends. It was imperative to find a community of friends who loved Jesus more than this world of outwardly living. I knew that was important because if they had that kind of quality of life, then I knew that the advice, love, and time spent with them would glorify God in just the way it should.
Entering into the journey of being on OBU’s campus, I remember praying for God to open up opportunities to allow me to see a friend in someone that I can confide in and do life with while doing this whole college thing. The first weekend after move-in day, I met girls I can’t stand a day to live without. They welcomed me with arms opened wide and I haven’t looked back. It is truly amazing to experience God’s work in this time of life. He knows your every need, and I assure you He will provide. God has continued to gift me with some of the utmost AMAZING friends that are out of this world. It’s like I have known them for a lifetime, but in reality, one month is all it took to make strangers into friends, and friends into sisters. I say all of these things with a genuine and thankful heart. By God’s grace I can truly say that I love life on Bison Hill. He has provided every friend and every joyful moment since August 19th, and it has allowed me to feel His goodness, relentless love, and faithfulness. Moving to Oklahoma from Tennessee was a step of faith, no doubt, but standing here today, I would do it again and again in a heart beat! When we respond to God in obedience, we receive an unfathomable gift of his presence in ways you can not vision.
Before I close, I think it is truly important to point out the community that OBU has created around campus all in all. They encourage each of us to identify in Jesus Christ, alone. The chapels are nothing short of amazing. They strive to feed us as students the word of God in a way that will be impactful and everlasting. OBU’s admin create and find opportunities for students to serve the Lord whether that be a mission trip overseas, a mission trip in another state, or a mission trip right here in Shawnee, OK. The beautiful thing about Oklahoma Baptist University is that they are creating an incredible work force out of our generation, but they are also allowing God to create amazing servants for the Lord, himself. The community around here is like no other. It’s a place to feel loved, welcomed, cared about, and most of all, it’s a place to receive an awesome higher education while obtaining Christian based views on things. OBU is OUR place!
